Garnet J. Stout, age 90, of La Farge, died on Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at Bethel Home in Viroqua. She was born April 21, 1919 near La Farge, the daughter of Hallie and Hilma (Silbaugh) Campbell. Garnet was united in marriage with John Joe Stout on August 10, 1939. They farmed together several years while raising their family. John preceded her in death May 28, 1989. Garnet graduated from Vernon County Teacher’s College in 1960 and was very proud of her teaching career which spanned until the 1990s. She began teaching grades one through eight in Salem Ridge and other outlying schools, and finished her career as a 4th grade teacher in La Farge. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in 1967, graduating at the same time as her son. She especially loved teaching her students about the State of Wisconsin. Her teaching skills continued beyond retirement, as she encouraged and arranged for her family to take educational trips, including to Washington DC and Alaska, while she remained in the Kickapoo Valley and worried constantly about her family while they were all gone together at one time. She was an excellent homemaker, cook and quilter and was extremely proud of her family. In later years, when health concerns arose, several friends and family reached out to enable Garnet to remain in her home as long as possible. A special Thanks is extended to her personal health attendants: Doris Odegard, Annette Hysel and Dennis Franks; to the La Farge Clinic staff, to Bethel Home in Viroqua, to Vernon Memorial Hospice, and to Dr. Jim De Line.
